In the Studio
A New York native and Detroit transplant, Campbell is a 2016 Redbull House of Art Alumni and Ford Curatorial Fellow at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. His exhibition with Vineta Chugh, Stranger - opens March 10th. Photographs by Marisol Dorantes-Silva.
Campbell's work examines the different mechanisms that impede us from having to face certain difficult truths.
"The main themes that run through my work are family, memory, history, identity and how all of those things melt together."
"My process is very self-reflective. I am interested in identity but can only start by examining my own."
"I’m fascinated with objects — masks, spiritual guards — objects that are held with incredible importance."
"Really good art makes the public very personal and also makes the personal very public. That’s what I tend to do."
